Comparing and differentiating characters

Similarities and differences between Karl,Fritz and Gretl.
Fritz:
1. Fritz is described as a young character and a creative one because he is very good at writing stories. He is also scared but only in the end. He is scared of the consequences of finishing the story because he thinks that Dr. Kalmenius is a dark and mean person and doesn't want to be part of it. "I beg you, he cried, I have nothing to do with this man" P.31

Fritz's thoughts are scared and confused ones because he is not sure what he has started when he wrote the story and is scared of finishing it. Also he is scared of Dr. Kalmenius."I beg you, he cried, I have nothing to do with this man" P.31

Fritz's action are confident when reading the story but scared after Dr. Kalmenius comes into the pub because normal folk think that Dr. Kalmenius talks with the devil and are scared of him. "Others said he was in league with the powers of darkness."

Fritz starts as a normal person but once Dr. Kalmenius comes into the pub he changes into a coward because he is superstitious about him."And like someone who has seen the Devil, he ran out of the inn as fast as he could."

Fritz's role in the story is a foil because he could have saved everybody if he would have finished the story but he chose not too which makes him a foil." Impossible I can't control it any more." P.77

In the end of the story Fritz runs away to another place and leaves Gretl to save Prince Florian ."Anywhere! Berlin, Vienna, Prague - as far away as I can get!"

Karl:
2. Karl is described young and is ashamed that he has not finished the statue. He is in a dark mood and is not caring towards other people because he didn't make a figure."Karl scowled and turned away" P.16

Karl thinks only for himself because when he sees Sir Ironsoul he thinks that he could get lots of money using Sir Ironsoul."The gold he could steal, the forbidden treasures that could be his..."P.72

Karl's action's are selfish and he only cares for himself as exemplified by the part when he thinks how rich he could get by using Sir Ironsoul.

Karl starts as ashamed and depressed because he didn't make a figure but later he changes into a greedy and selfish person.

Karl's role in the story is also a foil. He also could have been a hero or protagonist but he doesn't because he took Sir Ironsoul. "Yes. No! cried Karl, beating his fists together." P.40

In the end of the story Karl dies because Sir Ironsoul kills him when he says "devil"."Nearer and nearer came the little knight with the sharp sword,..."P.81

Gretl:
3. Gretl is also described as young and is a inconspicuous person because nobody notices her when Fritz is telling his story."So Fritz cleared his throat and arranged his papers and began to read."

Gretl thinks of other people and has caring thoughts because she helps Prince Florian when he is freezing and that is a example of caring thoughts."Oh, you poor thing! she cried."P.68

Gretl's actions are also caring like her thoughts because when she sees that Prince Florian is cold she thinks how could she save him."Oh, you poor thing! she cried."P.68

Gretl starts as a inconspicuous character but later she changes in a brave and confident person as exemplified by the time when Fritz reads his story nobody notices her.

Gretl's role in the story is the hero/protagonist because she wants Fritz to finish the story and this shows that she cares for others."You must tell the end of this one, though, said Gretl, or something bad will happen. You've got to."

In the end of the story Gretl saves Prince Florian and lives a happy life in the small village because she was the hero in the story.", and Gretl tucked her cloak around them, and held the little boy in her arms as she went to sleep."

Clockwork Paragraph

All Summer in a Day Paragraph

All Summer in a Day is a Suspense, Coming of Age and Science Fiction story.
Suspense:
"She'd better hurry; we'll miss it!"
This is suspense because the reader doesn't know if the teacher will be back in time for the sunshine.
"Behind the closet door was only silence."
Again this is suspense because the reader is not sure if Margot is alive or not.
Coming of Age:
"They could not meet each other’s glances. Their faces were solemn and pale."
This is coming of age because they develop their empathy by feeling bad because they left Margot in the closet when the sun came out in the last 7 years.
"Margot stood apart from them, from these children who could never remember a time when there wasn't rain and rain and rain"
This is coming of age because Margot is different from the children and she has no friends. The cause of this is that Margot remembers the sun clearly but the other children do not.
Science Fiction:
"And this was the way life was forever on the planet Venus"
This is sci-fi because it is impossible and unrealistic that people live on Venus.
"It had been raining for seven years"
The possibility that it has been raining for 7 years is unrealistic. It is not possible to rain for this amount of time.

I think that these examples prove that All Summer in a Day is a Suspense,Coming of Age and Science Fiction story.

Raymond's Run Paragraph

Raymond's Run is a Coming of Age story and Realistic Fiction.
Realistic Fiction:
"And I don't have to earn my pocket money by hustling"
This shows the story is realistic fiction because small children get pocket money and sometimes by hustling.
"Every time, just before I take off in a race,"
Again having a running race is a realistic thing that could happen in school and in cities.
Coming of Age:
"Cause she’s good, no doubt about it"
This is coming of age because the main character finds out that Gretchen is good and not mean.
"My brother Raymond, a great runner in the family tradition"
Through out the story Squeaky is learning that even though Raymond has disabilities it does not limit him. At the beginning Squeaky thinks that Raymond can't do anything but she thinks differently at the end.

I think that these examples prove that Raymond's Run is a Coming of Age and Realistic Fiction story.
