Figurative Language

Metaphor: The big kids call me Mercury because I'm the swiftest thing in the neighbourhood. This is a metaphor which is part of figurative language. Metaphor is when you transfer a quality or characteristic from one thing to another.

3.The All Blacks rugby team are a brick wall.
4.Computers are complicated idiots.
5.The typical teenage boy's room is a bomb testing area.

Simile: Simile is when you make a comparison (the things that are the same) using like or as.
1. The surf boarder was as cool as a cucumber.
2. The diamond was as bright as a light bulb.
3. The film was as funny as a lame joke.
4. The job was as boring as watching paint dry.
5.The old man was as deaf as a post.

Symbols: Something that represents something else.
