Comparing and differentiating characters

Similarities and differences between Karl,Fritz and Gretl.
Fritz:
1. Fritz is described as a young character and a creative one because he is very good at writing stories. He is also scared but only in the end. He is scared of the consequences of finishing the story because he thinks that Dr. Kalmenius is a dark and mean person and doesn't want to be part of it. "I beg you, he cried, I have nothing to do with this man" P.31

Fritz's thoughts are scared and confused ones because he is not sure what he has started when he wrote the story and is scared of finishing it. Also he is scared of Dr. Kalmenius."I beg you, he cried, I have nothing to do with this man" P.31

Fritz's action are confident when reading the story but scared after Dr. Kalmenius comes into the pub because normal folk think that Dr. Kalmenius talks with the devil and are scared of him. "Others said he was in league with the powers of darkness."

Fritz starts as a normal person but once Dr. Kalmenius comes into the pub he changes into a coward because he is superstitious about him."And like someone who has seen the Devil, he ran out of the inn as fast as he could."

Fritz's role in the story is a foil because he could have saved everybody if he would have finished the story but he chose not too which makes him a foil." Impossible I can't control it any more." P.77

In the end of the story Fritz runs away to another place and leaves Gretl to save Prince Florian ."Anywhere! Berlin, Vienna, Prague - as far away as I can get!"

Karl:
2. Karl is described young and is ashamed that he has not finished the statue. He is in a dark mood and is not caring towards other people because he didn't make a figure."Karl scowled and turned away" P.16

Karl thinks only for himself because when he sees Sir Ironsoul he thinks that he could get lots of money using Sir Ironsoul."The gold he could steal, the forbidden treasures that could be his..."P.72

Karl's action's are selfish and he only cares for himself as exemplified by the part when he thinks how rich he could get by using Sir Ironsoul.

Karl starts as ashamed and depressed because he didn't make a figure but later he changes into a greedy and selfish person.

Karl's role in the story is also a foil. He also could have been a hero or protagonist but he doesn't because he took Sir Ironsoul. "Yes. No! cried Karl, beating his fists together." P.40

In the end of the story Karl dies because Sir Ironsoul kills him when he says "devil"."Nearer and nearer came the little knight with the sharp sword,..."P.81

Gretl:
3. Gretl is also described as young and is a inconspicuous person because nobody notices her when Fritz is telling his story."So Fritz cleared his throat and arranged his papers and began to read."

Gretl thinks of other people and has caring thoughts because she helps Prince Florian when he is freezing and that is a example of caring thoughts."Oh, you poor thing! she cried."P.68

Gretl's actions are also caring like her thoughts because when she sees that Prince Florian is cold she thinks how could she save him."Oh, you poor thing! she cried."P.68

Gretl starts as a inconspicuous character but later she changes in a brave and confident person as exemplified by the time when Fritz reads his story nobody notices her.

Gretl's role in the story is the hero/protagonist because she wants Fritz to finish the story and this shows that she cares for others."You must tell the end of this one, though, said Gretl, or something bad will happen. You've got to."

In the end of the story Gretl saves Prince Florian and lives a happy life in the small village because she was the hero in the story.", and Gretl tucked her cloak around them, and held the little boy in her arms as she went to sleep."

The Scholarship Jacket Paragraph

The Scholarship Jacket is a Coming of Age story and Realistic Fiction.
Clockwork is a Suspense, Mystery, Science Fiction and Fantasy.

Clockwork Paragraph

All Summer in a Day Paragraph

All Summer in a Day is a Suspense, Coming of Age and Science Fiction story.
Suspense:
"She'd better hurry; we'll miss it!"
This is suspense because the reader doesn't know if the teacher will be back in time for the sunshine.
"Behind the closet door was only silence."
Again this is suspense because the reader is not sure if Margot is alive or not.
Coming of Age:
"They could not meet each other’s glances. Their faces were solemn and pale."
This is coming of age because they develop their empathy by feeling bad because they left Margot in the closet when the sun came out in the last 7 years.
"Margot stood apart from them, from these children who could never remember a time when there wasn't rain and rain and rain"
This is coming of age because Margot is different from the children and she has no friends. The cause of this is that Margot remembers the sun clearly but the other children do not.
Science Fiction:
"And this was the way life was forever on the planet Venus"
This is sci-fi because it is impossible and unrealistic that people live on Venus.
"It had been raining for seven years"
The possibility that it has been raining for 7 years is unrealistic. It is not possible to rain for this amount of time.

I think that these examples prove that All Summer in a Day is a Suspense,Coming of Age and Science Fiction story.

Raymond's Run Paragraph

Raymond's Run is a Coming of Age story and Realistic Fiction.
Realistic Fiction:
"And I don't have to earn my pocket money by hustling"
This shows the story is realistic fiction because small children get pocket money and sometimes by hustling.
"Every time, just before I take off in a race,"
Again having a running race is a realistic thing that could happen in school and in cities.
Coming of Age:
"Cause she’s good, no doubt about it"
This is coming of age because the main character finds out that Gretchen is good and not mean.
"My brother Raymond, a great runner in the family tradition"
Through out the story Squeaky is learning that even though Raymond has disabilities it does not limit him. At the beginning Squeaky thinks that Raymond can't do anything but she thinks differently at the end.

I think that these examples prove that Raymond's Run is a Coming of Age and Realistic Fiction story.

Landlady Paragraph

The Landlady is a Suspense, Realistic Fiction and Mystery story. It is Suspense all way through but the Mystery starts only at 3/4 through. The realistic fiction is also all through the story.
Suspense:
"Each word was like a large black eye staring at him through the glass, holding him, compelling him"
This is suspense because the reader doesn't know what will happen and not sure what is happening and wants to find out.
"That parrot,” he said at last. “You know something? It had me completely fooled when I first saw it through the window. I could have sworn it was alive.” “Alas, no longer."
This bit is also suspense because when the reader first sees the animals he may have thought that the animals are alive. It is a shock to find out that the animals are dead and it makes you think what kind of a person is the Landlady.
Mystery:
"Gregory Temple?” he said aloud, searching his memory. “Christopher Mulholland? . . .”
This is mystery because he knows that he remembers these names but can't think of them know. Also he remembers that these names were in the paper but can't remember why.
"Excuse my asking, but haven’t there been any other guests here except them in the last two or three years?”
This is a mystery because Billy is not sure why there have been only 2 other people in this house for the last 3 years.
Realistic Fiction:
"Billy Weaver had traveled down from London on the slow afternoon train, with a change at Reading on the way, and by the time he got to Bath, it was about nine o’clock in the evening, and the moon was coming up out of a clear starry sky over the houses opposite the station entrance."
This realistic fiction because it is highly possible that there is a person called Billy Weaver and that went on a train to London. The characters are possible to exist.
"Suddenly, in a downstairs window that was brilliantly illuminated by a street lamp not six yards away, Billy caught sight of a printed notice propped up against the glass in one of the upper panes. It said Bed and Breakfast"
This is realistic because again it is possible that there is a accommodation like this in London and that people go to this place to sleep and eat.

I think that these examples prove that the Landlady is a Realistic Fiction, Mystery and Suspense story.

Maze Runner Paragraph

                                                      The Maze Runner

This book is Science Fiction, Mystery and Suspense. The book is science fiction because it is set in the future where the Earth is all a desert because of sun flares. This proves that the story is science fiction. The book is also suspense because they are stuck in a maze and being attacked by monsters called Grievers. This means it keeps you on the edge of your seat all the time. This proves the story is suspense. This story is mystery because there are children stuck in a maze and they don’t know why and they are trying to find out why. This is a mystery because it is a story about the unravelling of something strange or unknown. This proves it is mystery.

The Amulet of Samarkand Paragraph

                                              The Amulet of Samarkand

This book is Fantasy, Science Fiction and Suspense. It is fantasy because there is a bit in the story when the main character summons a djinn and this is an example of magical forces which means it is a fantasy genre story. This book is science fiction because the story is set in a different world. This is in the same world as ours with the same geographical layout but there are magicians and magical forces in it. This proves that is science fiction. Last, the story is suspense because it has danger and adventure throughout. There are fires and demons attacking the characters and evil magicians. This proves it is suspense.

Fairy Tale

Fairy Tale: The Enchanted Cat

Once there was a Sultan who had a son and a wife and they ruled a happy kingdom. But sadly his wife died one day. He was really heart-broken . When he got really depressed and the kingdom needed his attention, his advisers told him that he could re-marry and not have to be depressed again. So he married a widow with a son. There was 1 problem that his wife was angry that her son will not be Sultan because the Sultan already had a real son. So the wife turned the Sultan's son into a cat by using a potion given by a wizard. She then tried to kill the animal but the cat was too cunning for the Sultana and her son,Ben Haroun. But at each night the cat would turn back into the boy for 6 hours in the middle of the night. When the Queen wanted to kill him at night after a number of fails, the cat turned into a boy and overpowered them. The next day the prince married, the wizard was executed, the bad Sultana and her son were banished, and the Prince became the Sultan and they lived happily ever after.

This is a fairy story because when the Prince became a cat that is a 'dream like' possibility and not real. Also at the end when the wizard is executed and bad Sultana and her son are banished it shows that bad is punished and good is rewarded and it is a ' happily ever after' ending and.

Sound of Thunder Comprehension Task

1. 10 thousand plus possible government action.
2. They would want to go back to 1492 because Deutscher would have started one of the worst dictatorships in the United States.
3. To shoot it in the eyes so that it is blinded and them shoot the brains.
4. Sixty million two thousand and fifty-five years.
5. A path that hovers over the ground and they must stay on it because if even 1 blade of grass is flattened then it may change the whole future.
6. They were sterilized so not to introduce future bacteria to the past.
7. They wear oxygen helmets so they don't introduce their bacteria into an ancient atmosphere."
8. They have already died.
9. Aimed at a random animal.
10."Why, why," Eckels twitched his mouth. "It could reach up and grab the moon."
11. It has red paint on it.
12. They cut out the bullets.
13. To stick his arms up to his elbows in the T-Rexs mouth.
14. It is in a similar but still different language.
15. A dead butterfly.

Bonuses:
1. When I read the first "sound of thunder" I inferred that the dinosaur had appeared. When the story said "the thunder faded" I inferred that the dinosaur had died. Right at the end the sound of thunder infers that the guns are being shot.
1."A sound of thunder. Out of the mist, one hundred yards away, came Tyrannosaurus Rex  A fount of blood spurted from its throat."
2."Somewhere inside, a sac of fluids burst. Sickening gushes drenched the hunters. They stood, red and glistening. The thunder faded."
3." He heard Travis shift his rifle, click the safety catch, and raise the weapon.
There was a sound of thunder."

In example 1 when the dinosaur came out the story said that there was a sound of thunder, thus I infer that the dinosaur is the thunder. In example 2 when they shot the dinosaur in the brain it died and the story said that the thunder faded, thus I infer that again when the dinosaur is gone so is the thunder so the dinosaur must be the thunder. In example 3 though when Travis took the safety off his gun it said there was a sound of thunder, thus I infer that he is shooting his gun but I also infer that there may be a dinosaur outside of the building.

2.
1. Ostrich eggs: This uses sight imagery and shows how big the eyes are. Also it uses something big we know and using it to show the size of the T-Rexs eyes.

2. Pebbled skin: This also uses sight imagery and shows how the skin is patterned like pebbles on the beach.
3. Sunk in thick ropes of muscle: This uses sight imagery and has a very graphic way of making you imagine the muscle intertwined on the bone. Also thick rope is strong and shows the strength of the beast.
"It came on great oiled, resilient, striding legs. It towered thirty feet above half of the trees, a great evil god, folding its delicate watchmaker's claws close to its oily reptilian chest. Each lower leg was a piston, a thousand pounds of white bone, sunk in thick ropes of muscle, sheathed over in a gleam of pebbled skin like the mail of a terrible warrior. Each thigh was a ton of meat, ivory, and steel mesh. And from the great breathing cage of the upper body those two delicate arms dangled out front, arms with hands which might pick up and examine men like toys, while the snake neck coiled. And the head itself, a ton of sculptured stone, lifted easily upon the sky. Its mouth gaped, exposing a fence of teeth like daggers. Its eyes rolled, ostrich eggs, empty of all expression save hunger. It closed its mouth in a death grin. It ran, its pelvic bones crushing aside trees and bushes, its taloned feet clawing damp earth, leaving prints six inches deep wherever it settled its weight."

3.
1.There is a bit were it foreshadows that something bad will happen and it does because Travis said that Eckels nearly killed them and that they would have to pay loads of dollars to the government.
"If you disobey instructions, there's a stiff penalty of another ten thousand dollars, plus possible government action, on your return."
Because Travis warns Eckels that if he does anything against the rules then he will pay up so obviously.
2. Another bit is were it foreshadows that at the end of the story when they get back Duetscher will have been elected and they will have done that.
"Makes you think, If the election had gone badly yesterday, and Deutscher had won, I might be here now running away from the results."
If people talk about how if Deutscher would won then people would go back in time so agian at the end they will have changed the future and Deutscher would have won.
3.At the middle the story foreshadows that Eckels will go off the Path later in the jungle.
"Stay on the Path. Don't go off it. I repeat. Don't go off."
Because Travis stresses that Eckels should stay on the Path indicates that he will later go off it.

Extra Bonus:
Simile: Use the noun simile when describing a comparison between two fundamentally different things, such as: "His voice was smooth, like butter in a warm pan."
1.Sheathed over in a gleam of pebbled skin like the mail of a terrible warrior. This is a simile because it says that the dinosaur skin is like the mail of a warrior.
2. Its armoured flesh glittered like a thousand green coins. This is also a simile because it uses the thing "green coins" and applies that greenness to the dinosaur skin.
Anaphora: When the same word or phrase is used at the beginning of a series of sentences, that's anaphora. Used to show emphasis in speech or writing, anaphora is a popular tool for politicians, religious leaders, lyricists, and poets.
1.The Machine slowed; its scream fell to a murmur. The Machine stopped.
Metaphors:I t came on great oiled, resilient, striding legs. It ran, its pelvic bones crushing aside trees and bushes, its taloned feet clawing damp earth, leaving prints six inches deep wherever it settled its weight.
SymbolismWhen you come across objects in a painting or story that stand for a concept, the artist or author is using symbolism to convey ideas.
1. The red paint symbolizes that the dinosaur will die.
2. Deutscher symbolizes a world gone wrong.
3. The title of the story symbolizes death
4. The guns symbolize that there is going to be a killing.

Figurative Language

Metaphor: The big kids call me Mercury because I'm the swiftest thing in the neighbourhood. This is a metaphor which is part of figurative language. Metaphor is when you transfer a quality or characteristic from one thing to another.
1.It was a slaughter.
2.England was destroyed playing against the South African rugby team.
3.The All Blacks rugby team are a brick wall.
4.Computers are complicated idiots.
5.The typical teenage boy's room is a bomb testing area.

Simile: Simile is when you make a comparison (the things that are the same) using like or as.
1. The surf boarder was as cool as a cucumber.
2. The diamond was as bright as a light bulb.
3. The film was as funny as a lame joke.
4. The job was as boring as watching paint dry.
5.The old man was as deaf as a post.

Symbols: Something that represents something else.

3.Hustle:"And I don't have to earn my pocket money by hustling; George runs errands for the big boys and sells Christmas cards."The bodyguards of Tom Cruise had to hustle his fans away to make space for him to walk to the cafe. Move or cause to move energetically or busily. Move energetically.
4.Periscope:"He looks around the park for Gretchen like a periscope in a submarine movie."As the captain of the submarine Boby was privileged to look through the periscope. As he swivelled it around the sight that met him froze him in shock. An instrument providing a view of an obstructed field. Telescope.
5.Static:"Raymond is hollering from the swings cause he knows I'm about to do my thing cause the man on the loudspeaker has just the fifty-yard dash, although he might just as well be giving a recipe for angel food cake cause you can hardly make out what he's sayin for the static."Just as the Corporal was waiting for the final order through the walkie-talkie the words turned into static and they lost connection. As the runner was sprinting for the 100 his legs stopped moving and his actions became static. Not in physical motion. Stand still.
6.Rowdy:"The parkees unfolding chairs and chasing the rowdy kids from Lenox as if they had no right to be there."As the skateboarder whizzed past the manager walked over to the other rowdy kids to make sure they don't follow the skateboarding. Disturbing the public peace; loud and rough. Rough, bad behaviour.
7.Slosh:"And sometimes after a rain he likes to step down off his tightrope right into the gutter and slosh around getting his shoes and cuffs wet."As James walked down the street with his can of Coke it sloshed down his trousers and ruined them for the day. Spill or splash copiously or clumsily. Move irregularly with a sloshing sound.
8.Uptight:"I'll high-prance down 34th Street like a rodeo pony to keep my knees strong even if it does get my mother uptight so that she walks ahead like she's not with me, don't know me, is a all by hershelf on a shopping trio, and I am somebody else's crazy child."In my book the bodygaurd must be uptight all the time to maintain his job. Being in a tense state. Tense.

Question 2.
Inference 1:"I don’t have much work to do around the house like some girls." From this I infer that this story was set in the 1950s to 1960s because at these points in time only girls worked at home and boys didn't so that's why it says "like some girls" not some children.
Inference 2:"When Squeaky said she would win the race she made that inference because she always wins.

Question 3.
Imagery 1:"A squeaky voice." This imagery uses sound imagery because it tells you how she sounds when she speaks.
Imagery 2:"Little girl with skinny arms" This imagery uses sight imagery because it tells you how she looks like.
Imagery 3:"As fat as I am skinny and has a big mouth" This imagery uses sight and sound imagery because it tells you how she looks and how big a mouth she has when talking.
Imagery is when you describe something using the five senses.

Question 4.
Example 1:"And he plays like he’s driving a stage coach"
Example 2:"Starts thinking he’s a circus performer and that the curb is a tightrope strung high in the air."
These examples show that Raymond is mentally unwell because he has these made up realities(fits of fantasy).

Landlady Answers

1.Foreshadowing:
Foreshadowing is an advance sign or warning of what is to come in the future. The author of a mystery novel might use foreshadowing in the early chapter of his book to give readers an inkling of an impending murder or other such thing."There was a vase of yellow chrysanthemums, tall and beautiful, standing just underneath the notice." This is foreshadowing because you take chrysanthemums to the cemetery which gives us a glimpse of a cemetery or death.

2.Foreshadowing leaves much of the plot to figure out for yourselves and a bit more mysterious and poetic. Both of these writing tools give us a clue of what might happen later in the story."The big shots up at the head office were absolutely fantastically brisk all the time. They were amazing." From this I infer that Billy Weaver looks up to his bosses and is inspired by them.

3.Swanky:"They had porches and pillars and four or five steps going up to their front doors, and it was obvious that once upon a time they had been very swanky residences." Because Bob had won the lottery next week he was driving around in a swanky Mercedes.
Congenial: "On the other hand, a pub would be more congenial than a boardinghouse." Marc and Anna's wedding party had a congenial atmosphere.
Rapacious:"The name itself conjured up images of watery cabbage, rapacious landladies, and a powerful smell of kippers in the living room."The businessman was rapacious about money as he walked down the street and saw a bog stack of money in the lottery window.
Dither:" After dithering about like this in the cold for two or three minutes, Billy decided that he would walk on and take a look at The Bell and Dragon before making up his mind."As I was coming down on the 165 bus I thought whether to take the number nine bus or the 4-6. As I stopped at the T-junction I dithered about it for 1 or 2 minutes and decided to take the number nine.
Compelling:"Each word was like a large black eye staring at him through the glass, holding him, compelling him, forcing him to stay where he was and not to walk away from that house, and the next thing he knew, he was actually moving across from the window to the front door of the house, climbing the steps that led up to it, and reaching for the bell."The forensic evidence compelled the judge to sentence a 30 year long time in jail.
Compulsion:" The compulsion or, more accurately, the desire to follow after her into that house was extraordinarily strong."I felt a sudden compulsion to eat the rest of the cake.
Dotty:"The old girl is slightly dotty, Billy told himself." In her later life Barbara turned dotty and her neighbours said the old girl is slightly dotty.
Dainty:"“Dear me,” she said, shaking her head and heaving a dainty little sigh."My British grandmother liked serving afternoon tea in a dainty tea set.
Tantalizing:"There is nothing more tantalizing than a thing like this that lingers just outside the borders of one’s memory."As Oliver walked past the window the tantalizing smell of roast and vegetables wafted up his nostril.
Linger:" There is nothing more tantalizing than a thing like this that lingers just outside the borders of one’s memory."There was a lingering warmth of summer in the air as the first of October arrived.
Emanate:" Now and again, he caught a whiff of a peculiar smell that seemed to emanate directly from her person."As John walked down the corridor after P.E. his bag emanated a certain smell that is better not written about.
Malevolent:The students gave the teacher a malevolent look as he gave homework out.
Naive:I used to be naive when I used to believe in Santa Claus.
Gullible:The boss was gullible because he believed that his colleagues work hard all day.
Beguiling:Giving children sweets is a beguiling method of befriending them.

4.But the air was deadly cold and the wind was like a flat blade of ice on his cheeks. This uses touch imagery. And the moon was coming up out of a clear starry sky over the houses opposite the station entrance. This uses seeing imagery.

5.I think that the Landlady has been killing the children and then later stuffing them because she said"But the trouble is that I’m inclined to be just a teeny-weeny bit choosy and particular—if you see what I mean.” and a normal landlady would except anybody who came there. Also when they are walking up the stairs she says"“Like you,” she added, and her blue eyes travelled slowly all the way down the length of Billy’s body, to his feet, and then up again" and this makes it sound like she is weighing him up and saying he's good to stuff in other words.

6."And now a queer thing happened to him. He was in the act of stepping back and turning away from the window when all at once his eye was caught and held in the most peculiar manner by the small notice that was there. BED AND BREAKFAST, it said. BED AND BREAKFAST, BED AND BREAKFAST, BED AND BREAKFAST. Each word was like a large black eye staring at him through the glass, holding him, compelling him, forcing him to stay where he was and not to walk away from that house, and the next thing he knew, he was actually moving across from the window to the front door of the house, climbing the steps that led up to it, and reaching for the bell."I think this bit is the climax because this marks the spot were he goes into the house and not to the Bell and Dragon. Without this bit the story would be different and this is the point from no return.

7.It did change because first I thought she was going to kill him with her bare hands but when the tea tasted like bitter almonds I changed my mind and now think that she poisons them and then stuffs them.

8.I really like the ending because its a really good open ended end and it makes you want to read more and you now roughly what will happen. Also I think the story is good because it uses foreshadowing and things like the burnt almonds and imagery and its a good read for me.

Many pejorative words are also sexist against women.(dog(feminine)-bad,dog(masculine) -good).Why may this be?
This may be because back when these words were invented or had meaning added to the culture was sexist and it seemed normal at these times. But nowadays we are against sexism and this is why some pejorative words are sexist. Another theory is that when these words were invented you would never insult a man yet its was normal to insult a women and so the pejorative words were only insulting to women.
